Turning Curiosity into Reality

For Lidia Pessoa, engineering has always been about one thing: turning ideas into something real. As a R&D Designer at ETEL, she combines creativity, precision and craftsmanship to develop machines that begin as sketches and end as high-performance technology. In this interview, she talks about curiosity, inspiring mentors and why the best solutions are always built together.

When did you realize engineering was what you wanted to do?
Who had the biggest influence on your development?

Several people left a lasting impression on me.

My apprenticeship supervisor, Mr. Kiener, shared an incredible amount of knowledge and taught me the importance of understanding every detail.

Christophe, the engineer I worked with on my first machine, constantly reminded me that engineering isn’t only about functionality. He often looked at a design and said:

“If it’s not beautiful, it won’t work.”

That sentence has stayed with me ever since. It taught me that elegance and technical excellence often go hand in hand.

Then there was Mr. Jaunin, who taught me how to assemble a machine properly. Even when I made beginner’s mistakes, he always managed to turn them into learning moments—with patience, humour and a smile.

Looking back, these people taught me something beyond engineering: knowledge becomes truly valuable when you share it.

What still fascinates you about engineering today?

I’ve always been fascinated by mechanisms, gears and movement. Even as a child, I wanted to understand what happened inside machines.

Today, that curiosity is exactly the same. What excites me most is solving complex problems and seeing an idea gradually evolve into something tangible. That’s probably what I enjoy most about my work: transforming ideas into reality.

How would you describe your role at ETEL?

I work closely with engineers to design machines. Everything starts with an idea or a technical challenge. Together we develop the best possible solution, and I transform that concept into detailed parts and assemblies that can eventually be manufactured.

Seeing a machine come to life from something that initially existed only on paper is incredibly rewarding.

“At first, it felt like learning a new language.”

What surprised you when you joined ETEL?

The level of expertise.

Many colleagues have spent years developing their knowledge, and you immediately notice it. I also discovered an entirely new vocabulary. Between technical terminology, acronyms and company-specific expressions, I sometimes felt like I was learning another language. But that’s also what made the experience exciting. Every conversation became an opportunity to learn.

When do you feel you’re making an impact?

Every project brings new technical challenges.

Because ETEL develops highly innovative and often unique products, no two days are the same. I’m constantly learning new approaches and discovering better solutions.

The most satisfying moment is seeing an idea become part of the final product. That’s when you realize your work truly matters.

What does career mean to you?

For me, a career isn’t about titles.

It’s about continuing to learn, taking on new technical challenges and working alongside
people who inspire me. As long as I’m growing, I know I’m moving in the right direction.

What would you like to master next?

I’d like to deepen my expertise in design methods and engineering tools while gaining a better understanding of manufacturing. The more I understand both worlds, the better I can anticipate challenges from the very beginning of a project. Ultimately, my goal is simple: becoming more confident and autonomous when working on increasingly complex products.

How do you recharge outside work?

Whenever possible, I disconnect from work—and from screens.

Reading and music help me recharge, while quiet moments allow me to reset.

I also enjoy crochet, sewing and DIY projects. Whether I’m building a small piece of furniture, repairing an object or giving something a second life, I love combining creativity with hands-on craftsmanship.

Why ETEL?

The combination is unique.

High-precision technology initially attracted me to ETEL, but the people convinced me to stay. From the very first interview, I felt welcomed. Today, what I appreciate most is the collaborative culture. People are approachable, willing to share their knowledge and genuinely enjoy solving problems together. It’s an environment where you are challenged, supported and encouraged to keep growing.

What would you tell someone considering a career at ETEL?

If you’re curious, enjoy technical challenges and want to learn every day, ETEL is an amazing place to start. You’ll quickly work on demanding projects, but you’ll never face them alone. Experienced colleagues are always ready to share their knowledge, making it an environment where motivated people can develop both professionally and personally.
